SEO Vocab : White Hat SEO

Like many things in life, SEO has a good side and a dark side.  The good side is referred to as “White Hat SEO” or playing by the rules.  Search engines such as Google have spent years building a very robust and intuitive search engine that is geared to deliver useful and relevant results: in order to deliver those results, they expect companies who directly benefit from their search engine to play by the rules.  White Hat SEO is simply that, playing by the rules. All search engine optimization companies should be familiar with Google’s webmaster terms of use located here and adhere to them.  Failure to adhere to these guidelines could get a web site banned or penalized from Google.  No Google, No Traffic.

I’ll discuss Black Hat SEO in my next SEO vocab post.

Moments Of Marketing Clarity.

I don’t get much clear thinking accomplished in the office. In fact, the office tends to be very distracting, phones ringing, meetings, etc.. So lately, I’ve decided to be out of the office each Friday.  I was very hesitant to do this at first, but after the first Friday out, I quickly realized how much I desperately needed that separation.  I’m still in touch with the office very frequently, BUT, by being at the gym, or going for a walk, a bike ride or even some fishing, my mind calms down enough to get some moments of marketing clarity.

Last Friday my brain developed an entire marketing plan system for our clients, almost on auto-pilot: this new marketing plan system ensures that my team and my clients BOTH are on the same page when it comes to their online and offline marketing.  Two Fridays ago, my brain developed an entire new look and feel for my company, a look and feel that it desperately needs.  My point is this, wonderful things can happen when you let your mind relax.  You owe it to yourself and your business to ‘check out’ for a while and let your mind naturally create, plan, analyze, etc.. Whether it’s the gym, a visit to the wax museum, a trip to the beach or whatever, spend some quality time out of the noise to get some real clarity.

Don’t Be A NutJob.

A few colleagues of mine in Orlando receive an amazing newsletter / blog via email twice a week.  We wait for it, pine for it, even long to receive the three to four paragraphs of pure zaniness followed by an awkward and oftentimes non existent transition into a sales pitch. Between the three of us business owners, this communication simply makes our day and helps us get through the week. This little guilty pleasure nugget of goodness is simply put, the most neurotic nutjob sampling of words ever put together all to sell one very specific product. The three of us even place bets to gauge the level of ‘nutjobness’ that may be included in the next one.

I am all about corporate transparency and being wide open on the Internet, being truthful about who your company is, being clear about mistakes that your COMPANY has made, etc., but this newsletter we receive is all about one women’s personal life, the trials, the tribulations, the tears, the whiskey, the smiles, the colossal failures. Basically, she spills her guts in hopes that you will become emotionally connected and buy her wares.

There is a huge difference between corporate transparency  and PERSONAL transparency online. Some personal things, in fact, many personal things are better left un-said online. Your life may look like a train week, your children may be failing in school, you may have just met some guy dressed like Chewbaca who swept you off of your feet at the Star Wars convention, you may guzzle 3 liters of Absolut for breakfast,  but please keep it to yourself and separate from your business persona and your sales efforts. I do encourage people to have a personality online and more importantly, encourage businesses to have a personality online, but boundaries and self respect / dignity should always come first.

No One Cares About You.

This is a harsh message for business owners to hear when it comes to Internet marketing and your web site.  NO ONE cares about you, or your factory, or your official letter in last months newsletter, or what your employees did at the company picnic last week.  The harsh reality with the Internet is that it is all about ME. What’s in it for ME on your web site, what’s important in your blog to ME, what’s so great about your social media status to ME?

Check out this great video by Seth Godin, a true marketing giant and remember to gear your Internet marketing efforts towards your prospects and clients, not your likes or your admin assistants’ favorite color:
